State of the Franchise - Kansas City Chiefs

A small step forward, it's only the Raiders, but Chiefs still win 16-10

Well Todd Haley has proved his words to be true.  At the beginning of the season Haley stated that he could "take 22 guys off the street and win 2 games."  Well, he very nearly has taken 22 guys off the street and has already won two games.  Will he win any more this season?  Remains to be seen.  However, he has won the two games he said he would.

Now bear in mind the second win only came against the Raiders, but in the NFL a win is a win.  So here are some of the good observations I have from the game.

-Jamaal Charles - I knew if given the chance Jam would show up and show he has some talent and promise.  Again, only the Raiders, but he was able to get the Chiefs first rushing touchdown of the year (a 44 yarder on 4th down no less) and ran for over 100 yards.  All this while averaging a solid over 5 yards per carry.  If Charles can eliminate the ball security issues then he is definitely capable of taking over for the Chiefs and being an electric exciting back.  Charles showed good vision, good quickness hitting the hole, and the homerun speed the Chiefs haven't had for years.

-Chris Chambers - Again, Chambers has made some good plays.  He had 3 receptions for 60 yards.  Chambers is the only receiver the Chiefs have that can stretch the field and they are finally starting to go down the field.  I like what Chambers brings to the table.

-Mike Brown - The aged veteran that has been under lots of fire lately finally came to play.  He had two picks, including one that sealed the game, and had no blown assignments like he had the week before.  Hopefully this decent play will continue.

Now for some of the more negative stuff I noticed.

-The secondary - Thankfully, the Chiefs were playing against Jamarcus Russell, who is nearing the biggest bust of all time, for most of the game otherwise some of the receivers that were running wide open were might have caught some balls and the end score would have been a different story.

-The offensive line - I know the Raiders have some talent on their D-line, but come on.  The Chiefs O-line can't do anything.  What is wrong?  Waters is a pro-bowler, Albert has a bright future and is as athletic as any tackle in the league, the right side is weak but getting better.  Their run blocking is getting better but they should be able to protect better than they have up to this point.  It is a shame.  My suggestion to fix the line would be to keep the right side the way it is, move Waters to center and then draft a guard with one of our second round picks.  Then we could even move Niswanger over to the right guard spot and he would fare better there.  But what do I know?

-Todd Haley sideline blow up - The jury is still out on Haley.  I like his approach and I think he has a lot of the qualities needed to be a good head coach.  His only problem lies in his blow ups.  He had a couple of visible blow ups on the sideline.  Now, a lot of coaches have these and if they win then it's no big deal, and the same will apply to Haley, however, he is not winning at this point.  I will say that I like that after he calms down he then goes and talks out whatever the issue was with who it was with.  That show's good coaching, and with some more time to learn and feel out his coaching issues, things will get better.

Final Thoughts:

All in all, as I said before, a win is a win and this season I will take whatever I can get.  However, you would like to see wins come in a manner better than this.  We should be able to score more than 16 points against the Raiders.  Their young inexperienced receivers should not be able to get that open, and their stable of RB's, though good, should not be able to run all over us as they did.  However, I am impressed with Charles and I am slowly being converted by Cassel.  Haley still has some work to do but I still believe we are on the right track.
