State of the Franchise - Kansas City Chiefs - Business As Usual Edition

Business as usual.  That’s what this last win seems like and that is a good thing.  The Chiefs came in, played their game, and won the way the Chiefs have to win.  Solid games all around on offense and defense.  Now, there were some issues but overall a solid win and one desperately needed by the Chiefs.  As always, here’s the good and bad from the game:

Good:

Dwayne Bowe – Wow.  Ever since that Colts game, Dwayne Bowe has just been a completely different receiver.  He is finally using his hands to catch the ball (can you believe it?) and is it making a difference.  His receptions are up, his YAC is up, and most importantly his TDs are up.  He leads the league with 11 and is looking good doing it.

Matt Cassel – His improved play has continued.  He is looking better/more confident in the pocket, he is actually going through his reads and for the first time as a Chief his arrow is pointing up.  Here are Cassel’s projected stats for this season – 3,318 yards, 28 TDs, 7 INTs, 96.2 QB Rating - !!!  Just for fun, lets compare that to Tom Brady’s stats the year the Pats won the Super Bowl in 2001 – 2,843 yards, 18 TDs, 12 INTs, 85.7 QB Rating.  His average the other two years they won the Super Bowl – 3,456 yards, 26 TDs, 13 INTs, 89.3 QB Rating.  Matt Cassel is right there in every category.  People talk about the throws and stats Tom Brady has put up but people forget the Pats won those Super Bowls by Brady keeping it under control and not making the killer mistake.  It wasn’t until Charlie Weiss left that Brady was unleashed, and they haven’t won a Super Bowl since.  Am I starting to come around on Matt Cassel?  Maybe, if he ends up with those stats at season end and we make the playoffs, we’ll talk.

Defense – After a suspect game last week, the D showed up and played well holding the Cards in check for most of the game.  They got some big runs and big passes they probably shouldn’t have, but they held them low in the category that matters, points.  Shades of the Pats Super Bowl defenses, no?

Verran Tucker – He hasn’t really done much but he is getting involved more and making some good catches.  He has the speed to stretch the field and I would like the Chiefs to try and get him more involved in the gameplan.

Jamaal Charles – What else can be said?  Great game, our best player.

Bad:

Secondary – I blame most of this on the pass rush, but they still need to do a better job.  They gave up some big plays that didn’t need to be given up, they were saved by not allowing the points on the board, but they need to tighten up.

Pass Rush – They got 2 sacks but those are just stats.  They Cards had to pass a lot cause they got behind early but they still couldn’t get pressure at all.  This is priority #1 in the offseason if you ask me because a solid pass rush ultimately makes the secondary better.

Final Thoughts – This was a business like win and it seems the players aren’t excited about it like they were the 49ers win early in the season.  That’s a good thing.  This means they are expecting these kinds of wins now and they know they have a lot of business left to take care of.  The Chiefs need to win next week against Seattle (every game here on out is a must win).  Good game overall.
