I’ve said it before this season and it’s cliché as all get out but it bears repeating: a win is a win is a win. The Chiefs pulled one out 10-6 over the undermanned Broncos but if you are what your record says you are then the Chiefs are 8-4 with a 2 game lead in the division with four to play (2 of which are at home). I will take where the Chiefs are and like it. The Chiefs have won two more games this year than the last two years combined, and with 3 more victories you can make that more games won than the last 3 years combined. That is an amazing stat and should warrant Todd Haley some major coach of the year consideration. If you ask me, if the Chiefs win 10 games (as many as they’ve won the previous 3 combined) whether they make the playoffs or not, Haley should have that award locked up.
The Broncos are falling faster than Tom Sizemore and they are about to enter NFL rehab with another loss. Josh McDaniels has lost his team and his job, the organization is in a terrible place right now and if they don’t right the ship then the organization will be in a steep spiral for a long, long time. It is for this reason that I will starting my “Keep Josh McDaniels” campaign, cause as long as he is there the Broncos will be what they have been since game 7 of 2009.
Pretty dull and unexciting game, but as always here is the good and the bad:
Good:
Tamba Hali – After being called out by the Jeff Report for being MIA the last 3 weeks he showed up big time. Hali was constantly in the backfield, constantly causing problems, and had 2 solid sacks, one of which caused a fumble at a crucial moment and may have been the play of the game. He is now up to 10 sacks on the season, double digits for the first time in his career, and he should be a pro-bowler (though we all know he won’t be).
Brandon Carr – Brandon Flowers is dinged up as is Kendrick Lewis. Carr and the secondary got torched last game against the Broncos so it seemed he was a liability in this one of the biggest games of the year. However, he showed up and showed up big time. This was the best game of the year for Carr and probably the best of his career. It is apparent what the situation is with Carr, he is good when he is “locked in” one on one. Carr has a problem communicating and when he and the safety are not on the same page is where he gets burned and the team gets burned. This game showed why he is still a starter and should be. Carr’s size and cover skills are legit man to man and when he knows he doesn’t have safety help. This is what Romeo did this game that he didn’t in Denver and it showed the difference. Carr had 5 pass deflections and a couple almost interceptions and a couple big hits, a solid game all around for Carr. This shows me the conclusion is obvious, we have two great man to man corners, PLAY MORE MAN TO MAN. I know it’s tough without a good pass rush, but these corners can handle, play man and let the safety’s patrol the field. Eventually this will be what our defense is and will resemble the Packers current defense.
Running game – Same as every week. Solid once again, no more need be said.
Eric Berry – Continues to step up and make plays in run defense and is starting to make more plays in the secondary. I feel like the game is still moving too fast for him, when it slows down, watch out, he is gonna be a player.
Dexter McCluster – I forgot how legit and exciting this kid really is. Wow. He makes this offense from good to explosive, his presence cannot be understated even though his stats don’t show the difference he makes.
Defense – The Chiefs needed huge stops in the second half and the D stepped up. They held the Broncos when we needed them too and that’s what allowed us to win the game.
Dustin Colquitt – Colquitt was putting them in a bad position all game long with his accurate punts inside the 20. Not to mention he made the play of the game by outpunting Eddie Royal and almost getting the Chiefs a safety. That may have been the play of the game.
Bad:
Defensive line – Now, they didn’t really have a bad game to be honest, but the Broncos did rush for 161 yards and that is unacceptable. The D-line has been somewhat up and down this year, but they need to tighten up the rest of the way, every game from here on out has playoff implications and we can’t afford to let 161 yard rushing games happen.
Dwayne Bowe – I know they were double covering him, and one of those covering him was a hall of famer, and he had 3 catches either overturned or called back because of penalty, but he still didn’t have any catches. He still had an impact on the game, but needs to be more involved, even when he is doubled.
Final Thoughts: It was closer than it needed to be, but fact of the matter is these games happen and it is up to the good teams to come out victorious and that’s what the Chiefs did. I will say this for the Broncos, they tackle extremely well. There were times when there were holes opened up, but they closed quickly and the backs were tackled. Props to them for that. It seems that the Broncos just match up well against the Chiefs. In every sport, there are teams that you just don’t match up well against, and this team is one of those teams. The Chiefs were still able to pull out the win and I will take it. With a Chargers loss the Chiefs have a 2 game lead in the division at 8-4. A win next week against the Chargers and a Raiders loss goes a long way towards the playoffs. That last game of the season at Arrowhead against the second place Raiders could end up with huge playoff implications. Next week is HUGE.
