State of the Franchise – Kansas City Chiefs – Limping Into the Playoffs Edition

Chiefs get smacked around by the Raiders, lose 31-10

This was truly pathetic.  The Chiefs didn’t look like the 10-5 playoff team they were and actually looked like their awful 2008 counterparts who were listless in every phase of the game.  I have never gone from  being so elated to so pissed off so quickly.  No more than a week ago the Chiefs dominated the Titans and found themselves in the playoffs, and yesterday they looked like a JV team scrimmaging against varsity and getting stomped.  The Chiefs got manhandled in every phase of the game and it wasn’t even close.  It was ugly, pathetic, and just plain hard to watch.  This is definitely not where they want to be heading into the playoffs.
As always, here are the good and the bad:

Good:

Tamba Hali – Tamba wrapped up a great season with 2.5 sacks and just one sack short of the NFL sack title.  Tamba was the only Chief who looked like he wanted to be there and played very well getting to Jason Campbell multiple times.

Dwayne Bowe – Oakland has 2 solid cornerbacks and they can cover anybody when they’re focused, so the fact that Bowe was able to make some small noise and grab 5 balls for 68 yards is a good sign.  Previously, Bowe was easily shut down by elite CB’s, but Namdi Asomuogh is as elite as they come and Bowe was still able to put up some numbers, so going into the playoffs that is a great sign.

Glen Dorsey – The man is a beast and only continues to get better.  Tamba Hali and the rest of the D couldn’t do what they do without Dorsey.

Bad:

Offensive Line – They couldn’t run block, they couldn’t pass block, they couldn’t do anything.  The line was just plain manhandled by the Raiders defensive line and looked like they were overmatched.  Our line doesn’t match up well against the big physical types, which is bad news with the Ravens coming to town next week.  The staff better find a way to make this line play some better football if they want to stand a chance against the stout Ravens D.

Matt Cassel – He turned an entire city into believers this year but came out and played AWFUL with a QB rating of 19.1.  He looked like he did in the early season, he had happy feet in the pocket, wasn’t stepping into his throws, was shortarming his throws, missed receivers high, didn’t check down, didn’t make his reads, it was poor.  He wasn’t given much time by the O-Line, but all the same, a better performance is to be expected if he is the QB we were all thinking he turned into.

Thomas Jones – One of the big things coming from the Jets last year was that Jones was released because he wore down late in the season, well it looks like he doing the same here.  He has been averaging less than 3 yards a carry the last couple of games and that is not a good sign if the Chiefs want to continue what they’ve been doing this season into the playoffs.

Coaching Staff – Getting outmanned this much by another team usually means that somewhere along the line, the staff did not prepare their players well enough.  There was the distraction of Charlie Weis leaving but more than that the players looked apathetic and like they didn’t really care.  They better start caring for next week.

Final Thoughts:  I don’t know what else there is to say about this horrific loss.  The Chiefs are a year ahead of schedule and can still be overmatched by teams with more Talent (Raiders, Chargers).  They looked apathetic in this game and they need to change that and get real jacked up if they want a chance against the Ravens.  I don’t care if the Chiefs win but I want to see them put on a better showing next week in the playoffs for me to feel good about where this ship is headed.
