Alright Jeff-reporters the votes have been tallied and tabulated and my man-crush for the 2009 season has been decided. Miami (FL) QB Jacory Harris is the victor.
Congrats Jacory! It is a tough mantle for sure but I am sure you will carry it well. You have joined some great company. It was a tight battle but in the end, Harris' cool demeanor and swagger won the day.
Miami (FL) has been somewhat down as a program since their dominance of the late '90's and early 2000's. However, with Harris leading the way, if this team continues to play as they have in the early going then watch out ladies of "The U" because the 7th floor crew may make their glorious return and if I know the U then I know there will be some "muddin'" going on.
As will now be the standard, I will provide a look ahead to the weeks impending game, evaluate how Harris stacks up and then will report on his performance with updated season stats following the game.
This weeks game:
Miami will play their 3rd game in a row against a ranked opponent as they take on Virginia Tech this week. Following their matchup against Va-Tech they will face Oklahoma and if they come out of these first four games at 4-0 they should be a top five team. But I digress, on to the matchup with Va-Tech.
First, I will have to give credit where credit is due, a lot of my information about this matchup will come from info obtained from SB Nation blogs Gobbler Country (Va-Tech) and The 7th Floor (Miami).
Harris vs. the Hokie defense:
Despite the stellar competition Harris has yet to face a lot of pressure from a defense, so if Va-Tech is going to have any success it will come from pressuring the quarterback and seeing how my man crush reacts. Harris has the mobility to escape any pressure the Hokies can throw at him and the arm strength and ability to throw on the run that can assure he will find ways to tear holes in this defense.
Miami has specialized so far by attacking downfield, specifically the middle of the field. This is a particular area of weakness as Va-Tech does not have the stable of solid linebackers and defensive backs as they had in recent years past. Prime area for Harris to man-crushingly disassemble the Hokies D and take Miami to victory. Harris' cause will only be helped by the return of stud sophomore receiver LaRon Byrd along with the stable of other talented receivers the 'Canes have.
Final Thoughts:
While Va-Tech may be young and not quite have the talent they have had in years past at this point Frank Beamer always finds a way to put a winner out on the field. However, Miami is charged like it hasn't been in years and is playing out of their minds. As aforementioned, if they continue at this rate they will be in the National Championship discussion and Harris will, of course, be a hot Heisman trophy candidate.
Predicting stats for a player is about as easy as picking the exact score but I would look for Harris to throw for about 225-250 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. I would also look for a completion percentage of about 64%. For the sake of fun I will predict his exact game:
20/31, 64%, 239 yards, 2 touchdowns, 1 interception, 26 yards rushing, 1 touchdown (this may be pushing it but I thought I would throw it in there.
Thanks to all who voted and I hope you look forward to following my man-crush this year as I do, check back for updates all season long.
