One step forward, two steps back, Chiefs lose big to the Chargers 37-7
Alright, so the buzz from last weeks victory has officially subsided and been replaced by the despair of getting stomped. The Chiefs were just outclassed in this game, never in it from the start. It was just plain ugly.
The defense was porous the offense didn't have a clue, we missed a field goal on special teams, everything was just terrible. This game moreso than any other this season has made me realize how big of a disparity in talent level there is between the Chiefs and the elite teams in the league. I guess tha tmakes sense as the Chargers are widely considered the most talented team in the league, although they have a coach who couldn't coach me to run in a straight line, and underachieve like I have never seen.
I suppose there were a couple bright spots. There were a couple goal line stands. The defense showed flashes of decent play. There was some pressure on the QB and most importantly Dwayne Bowe made another great touchdown catch with another good throw by Matt Cassel.
However, Dwayne Bowe still has problems with the drops and we couldn't protect our quarterback from a pack of jackrabbits. This is sad. I have nothing left to say. I wanna cry...
Random Thoughts from around the NFL:
-The Chiefs may be bad but at least we are not the Rams. Peyton Manning and the Colts came in a sotomized the Rams. The highlights made it look painful. The Chiefs have not had many bright spots this year but man, the Rams are a bottomless pit of suck.
-The Saints are still cruising and may be threatening to get the label of "best team in the league." They have shown the ability to win different types of games, whether it's defensive, offensive, or special teams. They have the talent and the coaching to make some noise. Plus Drew Brees could punt a small puppy in the middle of the field and still might be the most likeable guy in the league. Baxter bark twice if you're in New Orleans...**bark** **bark**
-I totally dig the AFL legacy stuff. I'm gonna buy and AFL legacy referee hat, the orange kicks ass.
-The parity in the NFL is quite crazy. This is the first time in league history in which there have been 3 undefeated teams in the league at this point in the season. Also, I believe it is the first time in history that there have been this many teams without a win this late in the season. I attribute this to the Chiefs luck, they went 2-14 last year and picked third in the draft. THIRD!!! How many times has that happened? Every team in the last ten years that has gone 2-14 picked #1, talk about some poor luck. It's going to be even worse this year when the Chiefs go 1-15 and pick fourth. This is insane. The NFL is destined to have poor teams like this every year because there is always a worse teams that pick higher.
-The Patriots are dangerous. They are quitely going about their business and may have the "nobody believed in us" card to play, even though people still picked them to win the Super Bowl. This makes a team extremely dangerous, when people believe in you and you can still play the "nobody believed in us" card.
-I would promise my first born son to Todd Haley if he committed to running the Chief-Cat (Chief version of Wildcat) for the rest of the season*. Miami came close to pulling the upset on N'awlens and they are the most exciting team in the league to watch. Seriously, will somebody please just try this and see if it will work in the NFL? Between the Rams, Bucs, Browns, and Chiefs somebody should do it. All teams have nothing to lose.
*Note - I would never under any circumstance give my first born son away.
-So who would I want in the top five of the draft next year? An offensive lineman might not make the most sense. We have a lot of money tied up in Albert, and we would have to move him to guard or make this guy our right tackle. Plus, who is out there worthy of such a pick? Russell Okung from OK State, maybe? I don't know if I would draft him there. My top options at this point would be:
-Terrance Cody - DT - Nebraska - A legitimate 3-4 nose tackle that can clog up that middle. His conditioning is a concern and may hold him back.
-Nfndaljfda Suh - Preaseason Big XII Defensive player of the year and has not disappointed so far. However, he is right around 300 lbs and more suited to be a DT in a 4-3 scheme. It would be like drafting Glen Dorsey and forcing the 3-4 on him all over again. Maybe not the best decision.
-Eric Berry - S - Tennessee - This is my choice. People say he may be the next Ed Reed and if you look at all four teams in the conference championships last year they all had a dominant, pro bowl safety that led their defense (Adrian Wilson, Brian Dawkins, Ed Reed, Troy Polamalu). If you ask me, this is one of the big keys to making the secondary legit and the defense tight overall.
Final Thoughts:
I have said it before, but it's still true...gonna be a long season. The Chiefs have a lot of work to do and I just want to skip the season and go straight to the offseason so we can start to work on filling some holes and keeping this train moving in the right direction. We will see.
