"Punting a football has many correlations to swinging a golf club. If you played with a duffer like me you would often see me not keep my torso stable. I'd come through on the downswing and start raising my upper body. That would make hitting the ball squarely - the way the game is supposed to be played - physically impossible, instead it would fall short and to the right. Now I always thought Bob Gretz was only so-so as an announcer but he has really impressed me with his writing abilities and his analysis of football. This last little bit takes the cake and I am a full on convert, I am a Bob Gretz fan. Well done, Bob.
That's what Colquitt was doing. The Giants put a big rush on him several times and that pressure coming up the middle had the punter raising his upper body too quickly and not hitting the ball square. Throughout the game he picked up 40-45 yards from the punters best friend, the roll"

Thank You Bob Gretz
Alright, so in an earlier post I mentioned how every time a punter shanks a punt the announcer says he "hit it off the side of his foot" but that couldn't possibly be the reason EVERY TIME, could it? I think no, and I have finally read something about what went wrong with a punter, in this case Dustin Colquitt against the Giants, when he shanked a few. This analysis is courtesy of Bob Gretz and Wednesday Cup o' Chiefs:
