The Future of the Big XII

The Big XII is shooting itself in the foot.  While the University of Missouri hems and haws over when they’re going to leave for the SEC, the Big XII still can’t get out of its own way.  After unanimously approving an invite of West Virginia, everything has come to a halt with the news that the Louisville is somehow holding everything up.

Word has come down that right before WVU was supposed to make it official, Louisville has come in and begged to be taken instead.  The Big XII has found itself with two dates to the prom and can’t decide which one to let down.  My how quickly things can change.

Just one short month ago the demise of the Big XII was all but a certainty.  Now they find themselves in a situation where they can pick and choose?  Let’s all not kid ourselves though; picking between Lousiville and West Virginia is like picking between a Honda Civic and a Toyota Corolla.  Both are going to get you there and be reliable, but you’re not turning any heads at the stoplights.

Man Crush 2010 - Who's It Gonna Be This Year?

It's that time of year again, who will be my man crush for this football season? I have some good quality candidates this year and as last year I will come back every week with a man crush update.

Jacory Harris - Miami

My first candidate is grandfathered in from last year as he was the victor from my man crush competition in 2009. Candidate number is University of Miami (FL) quarterback, Jacory Harris. The Heisman campaign started early this year for Harris. His skill set remains the same as last year, good size, good mobility, strong arm, and smooth release. He and his receivers are one year older and one year more experienced, a big year is expected from Harris and the first game of the season showed why, although he had a very poor performance in game two this week against Ohio State.

From the Mount - Upset Special - KU over GT

KU Pulls Huge Upset Over Georgia Tech, 28-25

I have been busy the last couple of days and with the monumental Monday Night Football game for the Chiefs, the KU game kind of got put on the back burner, but make no mistake this was a HUGE win for KU football. could the NDSU loss be a defining “loss” for the program, can you have a defining “loss”?  I think you can, if you lose a game like KU did in Week 1 you become the underdog the rest of the way and you can possibly ride that all the way to some success.  I agree with Bob Fescoe: “Between KU, KSU and MU nobody will have a bigger win all season than KU over GT”

The program that was left dead after losing the first game of the season in putrid fashion 6-3 to North Dakota State University (hey, they’re…they’re a pretty good program…) came out gangbusters against #15 ranked Georgia Tech and upended their system nearly as soon as it had begun. Tech is not what they were last year (ACC champs) but they are a solid D1 football team nonetheless. Much better than NDSU no matter which way you slice it. And KU came out and took it to them. I didn’t watch the game as I was driving but I saw some highlights and was getting updates on my phone. This game was just what KU needed.

Is There a Conspiracy Against Boise State?

The BCS Conferences are Conspiring to Make Sure Boise State Doesn't Get to the National Championship

Imagine the scenario: After Boise State pulled out the HUGE win against top ten Va. Tech on a Monday Night in front of a national audience, they are no longer a secret and have a legit shot at a national title, Michigan looks good again early and Ohio State has to play them, Alabama has to go through the SEC and the SEC championship, could Boise State finish the season #1? What if the SEC champion has 2 losses like in 2007 and Ohio State loses to Michigan with Iowa losing to Wisconsin? Does that mean our National Championship game could be a battle between the undefeated titans of Boise State and TCU? This is a plausible scenario with both teams being ranked in the top 4 right now. The BCS could be in some trouble.

This is why the victory of Boise State called to order a meeting of the Coalition of Collegiate Rulers and Overlords. This Coalition consists of the Old Guard: Steve Spurrier, Joe Paterno, Bobby Bowden, Mack Brown, Mike Tranghese, and Woody Hayes’ frozen head given life like an old character from Futurama; the New Guard: Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, Les Miles, Bob Stoops, Jim Tressel, and John Swofford.  Through an unnamed source, I have obtained the mintues to this meeting and the minutes state the meeting went as follows:

College Football - Should Reggie Bush be Stripped of his Heisman?

Reggie Bush May be Stripped of His Heisman Due to Inappropriate Dealings While at USC

Apparently Reggie Bush took rough $400,000 while at USC including cars, cash, gifts, and a house for his family.  As this was determined USC was stripped of all the victories they obtained where Reggie Bush played while he was ineligible.

USC's athletic director ordered that their copy of his Heisman trophy get sent back and all likenesses of him removed, completely distancing themselves from Bush as a player.

Now, the Heisman trust is contemplating completely taking away Reggie Bush's Heisman and striking his name from the record books.  I am gonna go ahead and say this is completely stupid.  Reggie Bush won the 2005 Heisman, done and done.

College Football Power Rankings

I meant to put this out before the season started but didn't end up getting to it.  Luckily, after the first week of college football nothing has changed here.  I am giving my top five teams in college as seen by The Jeff Report.

5. Iowa –Iowa returns 14 starters including man-child Adrian Claiborn who has got to be the favorite for Big 10 defensive player of the year. Kirk Ferentz is one of the best coaches in the country, especially when it comes to getting the most out of his players, and he always his team grounded and ready for everything. Iowa is on a tear the last two years winning 15 of their last 17 games and could be a dark horse national title contender, especially with their favorable Big 12 11 10 schedule giving them Penn State, Wisconsin, and Ohio State at home.  An impressive win against an inferior opponent in week 1 solidifies them in the top 5.
